Dr. Michèle Denise Birtel is a British-German Associate Professor of Health Psychology and Lead of the Research Centre for Mental Health at the University of Greenwich in London, as well as a Senior Research Fellow in Health Psychology at the University of Vienna. She has 17+ years of international experience in research, teaching, and leadership, and has been an invited visiting scholar at leading universities across 6 European countries. She also supported London hospitals as a volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving as a juror in a London Crown Court on a Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) criminal case was one of the most meaningful and fascinating experiences of her life.
Dr. Birtel has authored 40+ scientific articles in leading international journals (h-index: 24), as well as book chapters and articles for lay audiences in her role as a science communicator. She regularly speaks at international conferences and institutions. She has built academic and non-academic (e.g. NHS and charities) partnerships in 10+ countries, secured competitive funding, and led applied research projects in hospitals, schools, charities, and treatment centres. She is experienced in empathic communication with students, research participants, patients, and families. She is intrigued by the art of persuasion and storytelling.
